About 90 percent of all headaches are due to tension.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Give yourself a mini-massage at the first sign of pain. Using the pads of your fingers, press gently and rub the scalp, back of the neck, temples and shoulders.

  2. Step 2

Apply heat or cold, or alternate between the two. Take a hot bath or shower, or place a hot, wet washcloth or heating pad on the back of your neck. Place an ice pack on your forehead, the back of your neck or the top of your head.

  3. Step 3

Put a few drops of lavender or peppermint essential oil into the bath, or rub a few drops on your temples, the nape of the neck and the hairline.

  4. Step 4

Drink an herbal tea of feverfew, which helps to relieve headaches, or chamomile and peppermint, which are calming. A cup of hot, strong coffee helps to relieve congestive-type headaches.

  5. Step 5

Take supplements if you get headaches frequently. Calcium and magnesium relieve muscular tension, the enzyme bromelain reduces inflammation, and glucosamine sulfate can help to relieve pain.

  6. Step 6

Visualize the muscles inside your head and neck loosening and relaxing. Try to hold the image for at least half a minute every hour.

  7. Step 7

Avoid gum, drinks with ice, ice cream and salt. All of these can worsen a headache.

Tips & Warnings
  • Frequent headaches can be a sign of a food allergy or an underlying health problem.
  • Coffee can boost the effects of aspirin and other over-the-counter medicines.
  • Caffeine can cause some types of headaches.
  • If symptoms persist or if you have specific medical conditions or concerns, we recommend you contact a physician. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.

on 12/16/2006 I rarely get a headache so I looked at this as an opportunity to see if I could heal it naturally.

To be honest, it would have been a lot easier to reach for the Advil especially since I awoke at 2am in the morning with a pounding migrane in the back of my head.

I first drank two glasses of water then took a hot shower letting the water massage my head and doing some forward bends to get some blood flowing the old pea.

I then tried alternating the tie/heating pad/and ice pack on my head. You see that unworn ugly tie my grandmother bought me years ago had a purpose after all!

While all this was going my wife was nice enough to wake up from her slumber and massage my toes.

This is the first time I beat a migrane naturally, in the past they have persistently exacerbated to the point where my head felt like a thumping heart that was going to explode.

Not this time... HA!

on 11/22/2005 Boil some water flavored with rosemary and/or peppermint herbs or oil. Pour the boiling water into a bowl and sit down at a table. Drape a towel over your head. Lean over the water with the towel curtained around your face so that you have created an artificial sauna. Take long, deep breaths of the steam. After the congestion has cleared or there is no more steam, immediately rub the pressure points on the bridge of your nose, temples, and base of your skull.

on 11/22/2005 Try pressure points. Just press the spot on the web between the forefinger and thumb and hold it really hard for a minute, then release slowly.

on 11/22/2005 If my husband isn't busy, I get him to lie down with me and I lay my head on his chest and listen to his heartbeat. Maybe it's the steady rhythm or something, but it seems to work.
