When your children play actively, they're getting exercise as well. The suggestions below follow the recommendations of the U.S. Department of Education.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Play with your child, particularly games that keep him or her moving.
Step2
Encourage your child to take part in aerobic exercise. Good examples include bicycling, jumping rope, roller skating and swimming.
Step3
Start neighborhood sports teams and recreational activities.
Step4
Set a good example by displaying healthy living habits - watch less television, eat well and try walking instead of driving.
Step5
Make sure your child's school has physical education classes.
Step6
Encourage the idea that exercising is fun.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to let your child exercise at his or her own pace.
  • Aerobic exercise should be done continually for 12 to 15 minutes for maximum benefit.
  • If your child has any condition that would impair or limit his or her ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.

on 6/1/2008 Great concepts here. In my clinical practice as a nurse practitioner I see far too many kids who are overweight and lead sedentary life. I am growing more and more concerned now that I see high blood pressure in teens and young adults. This is seriously unacceptable and will most likely lead to life-long health problems. I believe Step 4 in this article is critical. SET A GOOD EXAMPLE AND YOUR CHILD WILL FOLLOW!

on 11/5/2007 And don't forget the power of a good role model. If your child sees that exercise has a positive place in your life, he/she will follow suit. For suggestions on exercising with kids in tow, see...

on 4/26/2007 Kids like to have fun, you have to play to their liking and then get them to act on it so that they will exercise. Eg. if I know my son likes Power Rangers. Then I will come up with an adventure for Power Rangers to go and find bad guys and fight with them. I will tell them that is a mission and then plan the mission in such a way that they have to walk, cycle or do some form of exercise. In order words, play to their fantasy..kids like to imagine things..play to their liking..that's how i got my kid to play with me...

on 1/5/2006 Even calorie-burning activities, like yard work, that are dreaded by adults are fun for kids. Let your kids rake up a huge pile of leaves and jump in it, let them shovel the driveway and then have a snowball fight. The activities that adults dread are the ones that kids enjoy.
