No matter what your age, you can be on guard against crime. These guidelines follow the recommendations of the National Crime Prevention Council and the Maryland Community Crime Prevention Institute.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Travel with friends or family, not alone.
Step2
Keep your purse close to your body, and your wallet inside your coat or a front pocket in your pants.
Step3
Avoid carrying excess cash or credit cards.
Step4
Sit near the driver or the exit if using public transportation.
Step5
Keep your doors and windows closed and locked.
Step6
Consider investing in a home alarm system for burglary, fire and medical emergencies.
Step7
Be careful around delivery or service people who appear at your door. Before letting them in, ask for photo identification or call the company.
Step8
Be alert to con artists at your door, over your phone, in the mail or on your computer. Avoid divulging personal information or agreeing to anything that sounds too good to be true.
Step9
Call the National Consumers League Fraud Information Center at (800) 876-7060 if approached with a suspicious offer.
