Instructions

    • 1

Read Advance Previews, a catalog for the comic industry. It will tell you what products are coming out in the next 3 months.

    • 2

Get to know your store clerk. The amount of comic-related merchandise is phenomenal; your clerk will have an idea of what valuable items are coming out before you do.

    • 3

Buy items that have limited availability. A limited-edition print, a special edition of a regular monthly or a limited-run vinyl figure are all worth more, because production is restricted. The less available a popular item, the greater its resale value.

Don't listen to these things. Speculation in the comic market is one of the reasons the industry is in the hole that it's in right now. If you don't read comics, don't get into it to try to make money. Get into it to read the comics.

How about asking someone who's collected for a long time? Speculation made by someone who's done it for 13 years is alright. People who don't like speculation are the people who can't find the valuable comics themselves. I bought Astonishing X-men #2 and purchased 4 copies at $1.94 from mail order. I also got Miracleman #15 (mint condition) for $8.75. Yeah, you should read what you like, but ask someone who has done the hobby for a while. I don't veer one company or another. I love IDW publishing, but it cost. I don't go for Marvel or DC, but I'm glad I got Batman #608 2nd print (4 copies for $2.25 each). I also collect stuff not worth jack, but for a fun read.
