How to Wrap a Cord

Wrapping a cord takes less than two minutes to do, but can add years of life to the cord and also make it easy to unroll the next time you need to use the cord!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • RCA Cables
  • RF Cables
  • Video Cables
  • Cords
  • Garden Hoses
  • Ropes
  • Extension Cords
  1. 1

Hold one of the ends of the cord in your left hand, letting the remainder of the cord hang to the ground.

  2. 2

Grab the cord with your right hand. Your right hand and left hand should be about two feet apart.

  3. 3

Pull the cable up and lay it in your left hand. Rolling it in a slight clockwise direction will help it form a loop.

  4. 4

Open your right hand and turn it to the right so that your thumb points at the ground.

  5. 5

Grab the next two feet of the free hanging cord and rotate your hand clockwise such that your thumb is now on top. Lay the cord in your left hand.

  6. 6

Repeat Steps 4 and 5 until the entire cord is wrapped.

  7. 7

Test if you have done it correctly - grab one end of the cord and throw the rest of the loop away from you. The cord should lay perfectly straight, with no tangles or knots. Beware - testing will require you to re-wrap the cord!

Tips & Warnings

  • It make take several tries before your cords behave, but it is well worth it.
  • "Train" yourself to wrap your cords snugly after each use and make sure you store them in such a way that they maintain their coil.
  • There should not be any "figure 8s" in the wrapped cord if you have done it correctly.
  • Avoid the desire to throw the cord in a pile or do a quick wrap. The time you save doing this will be wasted trying to untangle the cord later.
