How to Prepare a Horse to Mount

Ready to ride? First make sure your horse is ready, too.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • English Reins
  • Western Reins
  • Bridles
  • Equestrian Equipment
  • Girth
  • Saddles
  • Stirrups

Step1
Approach the horse from the front and talk softly. Then take the reins and move to the horse's left.
Step2
Check the girth - the strap that passes underneath the horse to fasten the saddle. Tighten the girth if it's not snug against the horse when you slip your hand beneath it. You should be able to insert at least a finger between the girth and the horse, though it should pass snugly.
Step3
Check the straps of the bridle; make sure they're not twisted and that everything is buckled properly.
Step4
Pull the stirrup irons down to the bottoms of the stirrups, and check the length of the stirrups.
Step5
Place your fingertips at the top of the stirrups and bring the irons toward your armpit. The irons should just reach your armpit.
Step6
Make sure the horse is standing still, then prepare to mount, standing next to the horse's left shoulder and facing its rear.

Tips & Warnings

  • Until your horse is standing calmly and square, with all four feet evenly on the ground, she is not ready for the mount.
  • Horseback riding is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
  • Always wear protective headgear when handling and riding horses.

on 11/22/2005 If you are mounting right next to a wall or fence, you can tighten one rein slightly more than the other so that the horse is facing the wall. This way, your horse won't be able to start walking until you are firmly seated and have evened out the reins. If you are mounting out in the open, I suggest you have someone hold your horse. I know from experience how scary it is to have one foot in the stirrup and no control while your horse is walking away, unaware that anything is amiss.

on 11/22/2005 When you are about to mount, turn the stirrup towards you and stick your foot in it. Then, hold on to the horse's mane and keep your reins in the left hand. Place your hand in the middle of the saddle. Then, pull the mane to get up, and boost yourself up with your right leg. Make sure not to kick the horse. Once you are on, make sure that you don't plop down in the saddle really hard (so that your horse's back will not get hurt).
