How to Do a Feeble Grind on a BMX Bike

There are limitless possibilities in BMX street riding, but you've got to get the basics down first. Once you've got bunny-hopping skills dialed, you can move up to some grind tricks, like the feeble grind. You can do feebles on ledges, benches, tables, rails or anything else you can get your front wheel and rear peg on.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Approach the obstacle that you are going to grind on, rolling with moderate speed. You should be just about parallel with it, with your pedals level. These instructions assume that you are learning this at a skate park, on a long box about 18 inches high with steel coping.

  2. Step 2

Do a bunny hop and get your front wheel higher than your rear. (Make sure you've got your bunny hops dialed.)

  3. Step 3

Aim the front wheel onto the top of the box and get your rear axle peg on the top of the box too. You'll need to try this on something at least 18 inches off the ground; otherwise it won't be tall enough to get your back wheel off.

  4. Step 4

Keep yourself a little stiff in the arms to keep the bike moving. Your body weighs more than your bike, so it has more momentum to keep moving.

  5. Step 5

Center your weight right above the lip of whatever you're grinding on, and keep your front wheel straight with the lip.

  6. Step 6

Hold on until you start to slow down or you reach the end of your obstacle.

  7. Step 7

Turn your handlebars off the lip and do a little bunny hop to get the rear peg off.

  8. Step 8

Land back down on the ground and ride away.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you're ready to start grinding on other obstacles, you'll have to adjust your speed to accommodate more or less friction from the surface (steel, concrete, etc.). Remember that steel pegs grind faster than aluminum pegs do.
  • Keep your pedal from hitting the top of the obstacle. The pedal, with you standing on it, can bring you to a stop fast.
  • You may want to wear some extra safety gear when you're first learning this trick.
  • BMX freestyle is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
  • Always wear a helmet!

on 9/22/2006 Foot plants are a really good looking trick when done right. You can use these on just about anything.

The first step in doing a foot plant is to find a nice bank or a wedge at a skate park. When approaching the bank you want to start pulling up on the bars like you're going to bunny hop. Then let the bike come out from under you and take your back foot off (depending on what foot you ride with forward). Then put your foot down and start pulling the bars in toward you. Jump with your foot and try to get your foot back on the pedals.

This trick takes practice, so your first couple of tries you might not get your foot on in time. Work your way up to getting your foot back on.

on 4/3/2006 I recommend finding something that's just tall enough so that when your rear peg is on it, your tire will be off the ground.

You can learn on concrete, but I'd recommend using some kind of wax to make sure it's smooth enough to grind. Instead of buying expensive grind wax just use some cheap candles. The wax is pretty much the same as those expensive grind waxes.

Approach the object at a speed that's just fast enough so you can grind without stopping. Don't go too fast, otherwise it'll hurt a lot more if you mess up. Bunnyhop once you are near the object and while in mid air aim for the top of the object with your front tire.

While your aiming for the top of the object with the front tire, push your rear peg toward the top of the object. Try to land with both the peg and wheel at the same time to make things much smoother.

Once you're on, try to keep your front tire as close to the edge as possible and keep it lined up with the edge so you don't ride off. When you are ready to get off, either bunnyhop and pull off the object or turn your wheel slightly, lean back, and ride off.

It's much safer and much better looking if you bunnyhop off the object. Now with all that said, get out and ride!
