There are thousands of ways to ride a bike doing flatland freestyle. Once you learn some basic moves you can combine them and move on to harder tricks. The steamroller is a good trick to use to link other tricks together. It's also a great trick for beginners.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Roll forward at a relatively slow speed.

  2. Step 2

Place your dominant foot on the front axle peg. (These instructions use the left foot as dominant. If you feel more comfortable using the right foot, substitute right for left in these steps.)

  3. Step 3

Put your right foot on the rear peg, on the left side.

  4. Step 4

Transfer your weight to the front foot and push the handlebars a little forward to lift the back wheel a couple of inches off the ground. You are going to be rolling forward the entire time, so do not use your brakes.

  5. Step 5

Kick the back of the bike around gently to the right with the right foot as soon as the back wheel comes up.

  6. Step 6

Grab the seat with one of your hands once the bike passes the handlebars and starts to go in front of you.

  7. Step 7

Keep rolling forward and use the leg that you have behind you to counterbalance the frame in front of you.

  8. Step 8

Carve in a circle by pushing the right side of the handlebars slightly toward the ground, keeping your front peg foot on the outside of the circle, and maintaining balance with your back leg.

  9. Step 9

Roll for as long as you can.

  10. Step 10

Get the frame directly in front of you and lean forward slightly to place the back wheel on the ground.

  11. Step 11

Put the hand that was on the seat back on the handlebars.

  12. Step 12

Angle yourself so that the frame is going to come back around on your right side.

  13. Step 13

Catch the frame with your right foot, up by the seat tube, as soon as it passes the handlebars on its way back behind you.

  14. Step 14

Drop down to the pedals and ride away, or go into another trick.

Tips & Warnings
  • Learn to perform this trick with either foot - this will make you a more versatile rider.
  • You can learn the rolling part of the trick first by simply standing in front of the bike in the steamroller position (one hand on the seat, left foot on the left front peg, frame in front of you) and pushing off with your right foot. Once you can roll in that position comfortably, you'll have more confidence with the ride in.
  • You may want to use gloves, shin pads and other safety gear when you first learn this.
  • To get a good sense of how different amounts of pressure on the handlebars will affect the frame when it is in front of you, stand with your feet on the ground, with your handlebars normal and the frame in front of the handlebars. Hold the front brake, lift the rear wheel off the ground and swing the frame side to side using just the handlebars.
  • BMX freestyle is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
  • Always wear a helmet!

on 6/30/2006 1. You may want to start moving slow or not at all. This a hard trick!
2. Make sure you have a peg on the front left of the bike.
3. Put your left foot on the peg and spin slowly to the front with your right foot in the air.
4. Make sure the leg is out of the way!
5. Spin the rest and land back on the seat for a sweet landing!
