Here are some tips for choosing a location for a kitchen garden.

  1. Step 1

    Site your kitchen garden near the kitchen if the area available near your kitchen offers good growing conditions.

  2. Step 2

    Choose a site that is in full sun during the growing season. (See 'eHow to Understand Your Site's Solar Orientation.') If you are in a cold climate, a site that thaws early will allow you to prepare your beds earlier.

  3. Step 3

    Select a site that will permit access to a storage shed so that equipment can be easily deployed.

  4. Step 4

    Opt for a site with excellent drainage.

  5. Step 5

    Pick a site that can be completely cleared of existing vegetation, including tree roots.

  6. Step 6

    Use a site that is not visible from the formal rooms of your house unless you plan to make an ornamental vegetable garden or 'potager.'

  7. Step 7

    Design an ornamental vegetable garden to give you more flexibility in choosing a location.

  8. Step 8

    Choose a site that can be protected from deer if they are pests in your area. A utilitarian fence serves this purpose well, but you might not want it to be visible from the house or street.
