4-H offers all types of programs for any interest. 4-H is not just for people who live in rural areas. It is for any young person interested in any type of project from agriculture to computers to photography.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Join the 4-H club in your area.

  2. Step 2

Attend a meeting and talk to other parents and children about their projects.

  3. Step 3

Talk to your child about his or her interests.

  4. Step 4

Talk to the 4-H club leader about upcoming project workshops. This is a good way for the child to get the feel for a certain project before you go to any expense.

  5. Step 5

Choose a couple of different project books from your local county extension office and let your child look at them.

  6. Step 6

Help your child choose a project appropriate for his or her age, your location and the amount of time he or she can spend on it. If you live in a high-rise apartment, raising a dairy cow would not work for your child, but he or she could participate on the dairy products judging team.

  7. Step 7

Participate in the project with your child - don't do it for him or her, but be ready to give a hand when needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are various judging teams a child can be on such as forestry, dairy products and livestock. This is an interesting way for a child to participate with animals without having to own an animal.
  • Your 4-H leader or county extension office will provide project books and information for free or for a very small charge.
