How to Pot a Bonsai

Getting your bonsai into an attractive pot and making sure it has the best chance of a long and problem-free life is as much an art as the trimming, shaping and care of its branches. Have a look at the basics.

1. Make sure that, if you are digging native stock, you take a large enough portion of dirt to get enough of the root system to ensure survival.

2. Be sure to carry some towels and plastic to wrap the roots and dirt in during transport.

3. Wet the dirt and towels and keep them damp until potting can be completed. Drying out of the root system almost always insures a shock that the plant won't recover from.

4. Remove a temporary pot or burlap cloth from nursery stock very carefully.
