Step 1
Use an orchard ladder to reach the uppermost branches. (An orchard ladder is a long ladder with one supporting leg; the narrow profile of this type of ladder makes it easy to place it inside the framework of the branches.) Tie a stout rope between the supporting leg and the rungs so that the ladder won't "let you down."
-
Step 2
Start cutting at the top of the tree. Use a pruning saw or chain saw to remove the branching framework of the tree in manageable lengths. Try not to cut pieces that are larger and heavier than you can comfortably lift and move.
-
Step 3
Move the ladder around the tree as you work. Don't try to stretch for those hard-to-reach branches. It's better to simply move the ladder.
-
Step 4
Continue removing the branches, but remember to leave at least one main branch to support the ladder. Once you have most of the branches cut away, use a shorter ladder that will stand on its own.
-
Step 5
Move the shorter ladder into position so that you can begin to remove the trunk, piece by piece. Remember to keep the pieces small so you can handle them easily. This may seem like a lot of cutting, but unless you have a tree chipper, it makes disposal much easier.
-
Step 6
Cut the last section to within 6" of the ground.
-
Step 7
Rent a stump remover to grind away the remaining stump. This machine makes quick work of tree stumps, but throws debris 25 - 30 feet. Aim it away from your home or the street before you start grinding.
-
Step 8
Burn the sections of branches and trunk in the fireplace after they've dried.

on 3/23/2009 Really, when it comes down to brass tacks, there’s only one place to go for industrial tree removal equipment. Landmark Machinery (http://www.landmarkmachinery.com) services the entirety of central Michigan for any stump grinder or brush chipper needs. They have great prices on lightly used equipment ranging from tub grinders to industrial trailers and tractors. It’s a very competitive business here in Mount Pleasant, but there’s only one place that’s reliable and dependable for all of your needs, and that is Landmark Machinery. I’ve been doing business with them for a number of years, and can only give them the highest of recommendations. The next time you’re on the lookout for an industrial stump chipper, Landmark Machinery is the answer for you.

on 4/29/2007 FREE STUMP REMOVAL: Dig a trench around the stump just wide and deep enough to cut the roots away from the stump. When all roots are cut, the stump is finally 'free', so simply pick it up out of the ground and throw it in the trash. It is really that simple! I've done this many times and it takes all of 10-minutes for most smaller stumps. For large stumps simply take the axe and chop the hell out of the stump (aka, 'grind' up the stump) -- no special equiptment, no digging, no $$$ and no chemicals required!
