Now that the 2000 Sydney Olympics have passed, we've decided to keep this page for historical interest.

If visiting the Olympic venues and attending events doesn't keep you busy enough, Sydney has plenty more to offer. In a day you can take a walk in a park, cruise the harbor, tour a museum, see the famous Opera House, swim in the surf and stroll through a historic district.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • City Maps
  • Local Newspapers
  • Internet Access
  • Computers

Step1
Walk, walk, walk. The sights in Sydney are everywhere, thanks to its location on the beautiful Pacific coast of Australia. The city is new and fresh, surrounded by harbors, beaches and parkland.
Step2
Take time away from the city at Bondi Beach, a sandy strip with great surfing, swimming and sunbathing that stretches for miles.
Step3
Admire the Chinese Garden and the Domain, two parks that are great for nature enthusiasts, picnics and outdoor recreation.
Step4
Visit Darling Harbor, home to the Sydney Aquarium, a casino, the National Maritime Museum, and great restaurants.
Step5
Ride the Manly Ferry. From the harbor you can watch great sailing from close up and get a wonderful view of the city and the famous Sydney Opera House.
Step6
Eat and drink your way through the Rocks, a historic district that was refurbished in the 1970s and is now a hub of social and commercial activity.
Step7
Research your specific sights of interest on the Internet with a site like LonelyPlanet.com or Fodors.com. Look at their attractions pages for helpful hints.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get a map from one of the many information booths that will be spread throughout the city.

on 11/22/2005 These offer inexpensive and wonderful views. A Sydney travel pass includes all ferrries, but not the monorail or tram (private companies). Enjoy!

on 11/22/2005 Sure beats putting 40-cent coins in. If making a lot of plans, consider renting a hand phone. There aren't enough pay phones around, and they're always occupied.

on 11/22/2005 When you visit Sydney, even when the Olympics are over, you must visit this amazing place. There are 12 different stadiums in this area, with the main stadium where the opening ceremony was being absolutly enormous - a must see!

on 11/22/2005 If doing a lot of traveling in Sydney, buy a Sydney Pass from a train station. It covers trains, ferries and explorer buses, as well as normal buses within the explorer routes. It's fairly expensive upfront but a saving in the longrun.

on 11/22/2005 There are a lot of places to shop in Sydney, but for the bargains try the Flemington Markets, catch a train to Fleming Station and shop till you drop. They are open most weekends. Check with the friendly locals ring the markets or the railway station.
