If you want to drive with the wind in your hair, nothing beats a convertible. However, to choose the model that's right for you, there are a few things to take into account.

  1. Step 1

Consider the interior. If it gets wet, leather or vinyl will be easier to clean or dry off than cloth.

  2. Step 2

Think about safety. Some convertibles now have roll bars that will pop up automatically in the event of an accident. Others have reinforced windshields.

  3. Step 3

Examine the top's folding mechanism. Is it easy to operate? How fast is it?

  4. Step 4

Look for a glass rear window. Plastic rear windows don't last very long and are hard to see through.

  5. Step 5

Consider the body structure. Convertibles have added reinforcements to make up for the absence of a roof. However, some are better than others. Listen for uncharacteristic rattles, creaks and shakes when you drive over rough pavement.

  6. Step 6

Look at the cargo space. When down, many convertible tops take up quite a bit of trunk space.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider a removable hardtop. If you live in an area with cold winters, this is a great option.

on 11/22/2005 The Wind Baffle is great for extending the convertible season. It blocks the wind turbulence from the back draft and makes the ride quieter at higher speeds in any convertible.
