Instructions

    • 1

Set up your equipment - your camera on a tripod and a light over the top of the tank - before you begin taking pictures. This will allow the fish to get accustomed to it.

    • 2

Choose a faster film such as ASA 400 to allow for low light and movement.

    • 3

Try using a telephoto lens of about 28mm to 80mm with an extension tube for a close shot. You will need to experiment with different lenses and lighting to find what works with your fish tank.

    • 4

Watch the background and shadows when taking pictures. Wait until a fish is against a contrasting background and out of the shadows so that it will show up in the finished picture.

    • 5

Use a light over the tank, but be very careful when using electric lighting over water. It will need to be very secure to prevent getting a fatal shock.

    • 6

Avoid using the flash on your camera, which may cause a glare off the glass and give your photograph a shiny spot right where your fish should have been.

    • 7

Focus on the fish as it moves across your line of vision. If the fish is moving toward you, increase your depth of field to get more of the fish in focus.

    • 8

Use the three Ps when photographing your fish: practice, patience and plenty of pictures.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be extremely careful using anything electrical near water.

  • Do not let the lighting overheat your aquarium.
