Whether it's in honor of a special occasion or because he really needs clothes, buying for a man can be a tricky proposition. What we like and think will flatter him may leave him raising his brows. Or, he may be so picky that only certain brand names, colors or styles are an option. So what's a mate to do?

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flannel Shirts (men)
  • Golf Shirts
  • Men's T-shirts
  • Men's Baggy Pants
  • Men's Belt
  • Men's Button-down Shirts
  • Men's Casual Tops
  • Men's Denim Shirts
  • Men's Jeans
  • Men's Wool Sweaters
  • Mens' Sweaters
  1. Step 1

Show him some things you'd consider buying as a gift for your dad, brother or friend and ask his opinion. If he senses the attention is not on him, he may offer insight into what he does or doesn't like in terms of style and color.

  2. Step 2

Get into his closet and peek into his drawers to take in his entire clothing collection. Think of all the things you've seen him in and compare them to the things you've rarely seen him in. Purchase items that resemble the former.

  3. Step 3

Make a note of the sizes of his favorite shirts and pants. Look at the cuts of his clothes and think about whether he tends to favor a looser or tighter fit.

  4. Step 4

Hit the stores and shop. Let sales associates know about your mission and get their feedback on what guys like yours have been buying for themselves.

  5. Step 5

Buy the brand names that he wears most often. Chances are good that they fit him best and offer the prints and fabrics he prefers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider things that mimic the attire of the activities he loves. He may golf, fish or love to watch race car driving, and chances are good that he likes to blend into the crowd.
  • Tuck a gift receipt into the bag or gift box so he has the option to return or exchange the purchase.
  • Resist the impulse to buy items that are out of his comfort zone. We may wish he'd grow out of logo print T-shirts or plaid flannels, but forcing our preferences may leave him resentful.
  • Pants are a tough buy because you have to consider waist circumference and leg length.
  • Note the return policies of the stores you purchase from so you know your options in case things don't work out.
