Granitas are Italian-style ices that can easily be made at home without any special equipment. This coffee granita is a refreshingly cool pick-me-up. This recipe makes about 1 1/2 c.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 c. espresso
  • 1/2 c. regular coffee
  • 1/3 c. sugar
  • 1/3 c. heavy cream
  • Groceries
  • Cups
  • Forks
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Wire Whisks
  • Forks
  • Mixing bowls
  1. Step 1

Mix the coffee, espresso and sugar together, preferably while the coffee's still hot.

  2. Step 2

Taste the mixture. It should taste like extra-strong, extra-sweet coffee.

  3. Step 3

Pour the mixture into a shallow container and place it in the freezer, uncovered.

  4. Step 4

    Meanwhile, chill the cream well.

  5. Step 5

As a film freezes on top of the container, break it up and stir it with a fork every 20 minutes or so. This step will create the granita's characteristic grainy texture.

  6. Step 6

As the mixture freezes it will harden faster, so stir it more often to keep it from freezing too solid. The final texture should resemble chipped ice.

  7. Step 7

Whip the cream until frothy but pourable - just before serving.

  8. Step 8

Spoon the granita into small cups and top with dollops of the lightly whipped cream.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't omit the whipped cream in this recipe. Coffee granita is very strong and sweet, and the whipped cream is very important to mellow the granita and to balance its flavor.
  • If you didn't stir the granita enough and it froze solid, don't worry. You can shave it with a spoon or the tines of a fork, or even grate it with a large clean cheese grater.
