  1. Step 1

Use a coffee can or carefully remove the label from a large can.

  2. Step 2

Wash the can and fill it with water.

  3. Step 3

Put the can in the freezer. The ice will keep the can's shape while you punch holes in it.

  4. Step 4

Draw a design on the inside of the label. If the can doesn't have a label, use a piece of paper cut to size. Remember that the pattern will be made with holes.

  5. Step 5

Tape the label back onto the can in reverse, so your design faces out.

  6. Step 6

Lay the can on a soft surface such as grass or a folded rug.

  7. Step 7

Poke holes in the can with an awl or a long nail, using your drawing as a guide.

  8. Step 8

Punch a pair of larger holes opposite each other at the can's rim. This is where you can run a wire through to make a handle.

  9. Step 9

Turn the can upside down and let the ice melt.

  10. Step 10

Press a lump of clay into the bottom of the can. It should cover the entire bottom and be at least an inch deep so it can hold a candle securely.

  11. Step 11

Stick a candle in the lantern and enjoy your masterpiece.

Tips & Warnings
  • Paint the outside of the lantern with barbecue paint, which is made to withstand heat.
  • Use different-size nails for different-size holes.
  • Be very careful putting your hands inside the can once the holes are punched.
