Appearing near the top of an Internet search engine listing is an almost unequaled marketing advantage for your online business. It's essential if you want your Internet business to flourish.

Things You'll Need:

  • Meta tags
  1. Step 1

Build your Web site in a way that gives it better odds of appearing near the top of a search engine listing. Use links to quality sites, a good title, and relevant, meaningful, high-quality content to increase your chances of a good listing.

  2. Step 2

Use meta tags as an additional tool to help you get a high ranking on search engines. Meta tags are lines of text inserted at the top of a Web page which can be read by search engines, but are invisible to visitors to your site. Meta tags usually contain keywords describing your site. Search the Web for specifics on building meta tags into your site.

  3. Step 3

Make sure your Web site is completely up and running prior to registering with search engines.

  4. Step 4

Decide which search engines would best meet your needs. Services like Yahoo! and Google generate the highest traffic and would bring the most visitors to your site. Begin with these, but register with as many search engines as possible for optimal results.

  5. Step 5

Check each search engine's requirements and tailor your submissions for each one.

  6. Step 6

Visit each search engine you select and register your site. Look for an "Add Your URL" or "Add Your Site" link and follow the directions given.

  7. Step 7

Have as many established Web sites as possible contain a link to your Web site. This also contributes to a favorable listing for some search engines.

Tips & Warnings
  • Search engines build databases of Web sites by sending crawlers (robot programs) out onto the Internet to retrieve text and place it in their indexes. The odds are that the major search engines will index your Web site even if you don't register it.
  • Search engines use their own formulas for determining how to rank Web pages. Companies that guarantee your position in a search engine listing cannot really do so in good faith, because the criteria change on a weekly or monthly basis.
  • Do not abuse meta tags by using popular keywords that have nothing to do with the content of your site. This doesn't work, and you might get dropped from the listing altogether if the search engine catches on.
  • Features such as registrations or passwords, databases, and text embedded in graphics may prevent your site from being read and indexed by search engine crawlers.
