Try to keep your sense of time straight in the land of the midnight sun, and save your long-distance calls for nights and weekends.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Determine what time it is in the United States. Sweden is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, which means that it's 6 hours later in Sweden than it is on the East Coast of the United States, and 9 hours later than it is on the West Coast.

  2. Step 2

Dial 009, the international access code for Sweden.

  3. Step 3

Dial the country code for the United States, which is 1.

  4. Step 4

Punch in the city code (or area code) for the city you wish to call. Some examples include 310 for Los Angeles, 415 for San Francisco, 212 for Manhattan and 312 for Chicago.

  5. Step 5

Dial the personal seven-digit phone number.

Tips & Warnings
  • Many telephones require credit cards or special phone cards, which can be purchased from newsagents. A cheaper option can be to place your long-distance calls from local telephone offices or post offices.
  • You may wish to use your own calling card to place international calls instead of dialing direct. In this case, you would dial the long-distance company's access code plus the city code plus the personal phone number. AT&T's access code from Sweden is 020-799-111, MCI's is 020-795-922 and Sprint's is 020-799-011.
  • Although it may be more convenient, avoid making long-distance calls through your hotel. Hotels always add additional surcharges when placing the call for you.

on 3/2/2009 Yeah, this the more traditional method of calling through a local provider. Below is a link to an article on an expat site in Sweden that talks about making these calls over the web instead of just dialing - this is probably your cheapest alternative.http://www.xpats.nu/articles.php?id=21
