Instructions

      Understand that you must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen or a legal resident, and without any felony convictions to be employed by the U.S. Postal Service. If you have a general equivalency diploma (GED), the minimum age is 17 years.

      Contact the human resources department at your local post office for local job openings, applications and the next testing date.

      Obtain a study guide to help you prepare for the mandatory exam. You will be tested on number series, address checking and memory. Ask your local post office for information on obtaining study guides, or get the prep guide shown under Related Books.

      Check the post office's National Directory Book for phone numbers of national post offices to learn about openings and exams in other areas.

      Be prepared to answer questions about your abilities when you're called in for an interview.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that most postal workers are union members, subject to dues.

  • Understand that some of the work can be physically demanding, such as standing or walking for long periods of time.

    Most new postal workers must also be able to lift 60 pounds. New workers, too, have schedules that change every day, which makes it almost impossible to go to school. We recommend you stay in school and get a different part-time job if you need to work.
