The MP3 is creating a new channel for the promotion and distribution of music. Previously, musicians spent many a night playing small, smoky clubs in hopes of getting discovered by a record company scout, meanwhile building themselves a local fan base to spread the word of their existence. The union of MP3 and the Internet means a whole new way for musicians to inexpensively promote themselves.

on 3/2/2006 Read the TOS for your music store. Some services such as iTunes sell files that only work on the iPod, where as most sites, like Napster, sell WMA/Playforsure files which only work on non-iPod MP3 players. Both use this nasty new technology called DRM. DRM's job is to restrict the consumer from being able to copy the music, convert it, burn it to a CD, or move it to another computer or device. Napster, iTunes, Yahoo Music, and many others use DRM. Napster and Yahoo both offer a music rental service of sorts. The DRM they place on the files will make you pay extra to burn or move to a device, and they stop working when you quit paying their monthly fee.
