How to Treat Achilles Tendinitis
Achilles tendinitis is the inflammation of the Achilles tendon due to overexertion. Treating this condition entails a regimen comprised mostly of rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) for the first 48 to 72 hours.
Instructions
-
-
1
Stop what you're doing and rest the injured area - that is, refrain from participating in the activity that precipitated the pain until the swelling has subsided.
-
2
Take two ibuprofen every 4 to 6 hours with the onset of symptoms.
-
-
3
Apply ice for 20 to 40 minutes every 2 hours, for 24 to 48 hours. Wrap a plastic bag of ice in a towel before placing it against the skin, or soak the foot in a cooking pot or stream of icy water. This will decrease swelling, pain and inflammation.
-
4
Compress the swollen area by wrapping it in an elastic bandage, ace bandage or athletic tape to limit movement and reduce swelling, allowing the tendons to rest.
-
5
Elevate the injured area to above the level of the heart. This will help reduce internal bleeding and swelling.
-
6
Drink lots of water. Urine should be clear in color and copious in quantity.

Tips & Warnings
Once the swelling subsides, start exercising with simple stretches - toe raises are especially good for the Achilles tendon - if you can do so without pain. Then slowly ease back into your normal workout schedule.
If injury doesn't respond to self-treatment in two weeks, see a physician.
If symptoms persist or if you have specific medical conditions or concerns, we recommend you contact a physician. This information is not intended as a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment.
