Sometimes a candle is a bit too large or small for the holder you'd like to use. Here's how to make adjustments. You want the candle to be held tightly in the candleholder for safety.

Things You'll Need:

  • Aluminum Foil
  • Candleholders
  • Candles

  1. Step 1

Trim a candle end that's too large for the holder carefully, using either a pocketknife or a candle shaver. You can also soften the base of the candle by holding it under hot running water until the wax is pliable, and then gently fit it into the holder.

  2. Step 2

Drip melted wax into the holder for a candle or taper whose end is too small, then press the candle into the hot wax until it sticks. Other options include wrapping the too-small end with aluminum foil or tape.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you use the proper candleholder for the type of candle you're using. The candles will burn better and cleaner.
  • For safety's sake, don't set candles too near the edge of the table, and set them away from items that will be constantly passed.
  • The flame of a candle should be above eye level (about 18 inches high) so the flame isn't distracting to the eye.
