How to Identify Physical Constraints of Your Property

When considering landscaping or home improvement projects, it is important to understand the limitations imposed by your property's physical features. Here are few things to look for.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Tape Measure

Step1
Locate underground utilities. The local power company can send someone out to spray paint lines on the ground to indicate your gas, water, sewer and electrical lines.
Step2
Locate your septic tank and drainage field. Understand what kinds of construction are permitted within your drainage field. Often, a lawn is all that is permitted.
Step3
Estimate the slope of your property. Anything steeper than a 1 foot change over 20 feet is uncomfortable for walking. Making the property flat will require regrading.
Step4
Identify access routes for construction equipment and delivery trucks. If a contractor can't easily reach the location you have in mind for your summer house or other structure, you may incur an extra charge or have to lug the lumber to the top of the hill yourself.
Step5
Measure the space available for your planned improvement. Confirm that the improvement will fit comfortably, with space for access and maintenance, in the location you have in mind.
Step6
Take note of the availability of sunlight on your property throughout the year.
Step7
Notice the location of heavy snowdrifts during winter.
Step8
Take note of drainage patterns. Runoff and puddles might interfere with a planned improvement.
