Entertainment, curiosity or a need to get another opinion on a complicated life issue are a few of the many reasons for consulting a psychic. Psychics often specialize in a particular discipline, and some are also trained as therapists or counselors with a Master of Divinity degree or a diploma in clinical social work.

  1. Step 1

Think about your reasons for using a psychic. Different issues require different types of psychics.

  2. Step 2

Decide what specialty you'd like your psychic to have. Specialties include palm or tarot card reading, intuitive readings, astrology and tea leaves.

  3. Step 3

Ask friends or family for recommendations. Often the best psychics don't advertise; instead, they obtain clients by word-of-mouth.

  4. Step 4

Consult magazine and newspaper articles about psychics. Psychics with good track records often will have been written about in a positive way.

  5. Step 5

Research online for a psychic. Make contact via e-mail to see if you can obtain references.

  6. Step 6

Create a list of psychics from this information.

  7. Step 7

Call and interview each psychic before you choose one. Ask what their beliefs are, what their background and training is, how they work and how much they charge.

  8. Step 8

Check references before you make an appointment.

Tips & Warnings
  • When interviewing a psychic, listen to your gut feelings. Avoid working with anyone who makes you feel uncomfortable or vulnerable or tells you anything that frightens you. Similarly, avoid a psychic who makes outrageous claims that raise skepticism. A good psychic is a professional with whom you should feel comfortable and safe.
  • Most reputable psychics charge a flat rate per session or on an hourly basis.
  • Avoid any psychic who asks for money in exchange for removing a curse or a threat to your life or that of a loved one. This is a common scam used by unscrupulous con artists to intimidate people and gain wealth.
  • Avoid using "storefront psychics."
  • Avoid using psychic phone services. Besides being very expensive, most of these businesses are in the business of entertainment, not counseling. Their job is to keep you on the phone as long as possible.
  • If you find yourself consulting a psychic more often than you'd like, consider if you're addicted to the excitement and attention involved in a psychic reading. Also consider if you're avoiding something in your life. Psychics are not a quick fix: What may be needed is a deeper exploration of the issues involved that only a trained therapist or counselor can provide.

on 2/12/2009 Then, there are those of us who don't charge for a reading (like the late great Edgar Cayce). Psychics use their 6th sense, which all of us have. Some of us have just had a lot more practice, but we are open to freely teaching others how to tune in on their own.

on 1/6/2009 Sometimes some friends and go to psychic fairs. What we do, is walk around the room and get a feel for each psychic. Watch them in action. There are lots of phonies out there. Sometimes one of us picks a winner and then we all let that psychic in particular do all of our readings. Other times, there are so many to choose from, we try several, note it for future reference and compare notes. IN all, its all good fun.

on 10/7/2008 I disagree that one should not use the services of a psychic by phone. There are some advantages. Its more anonynmous. You also cut down on the risk of dealing with a fake that is "cold reading" and judges what they say by your appearance, clothes, etc. Some phone psychics will try to keep people on the phone. Yet some in person readers try to drag out the reading as well and use many dishonest tactics. Its unfair to label phone readers as dishonest or someone who wants to drag out your calls simply because they are a phone reader. Many of us are honest. I don't charge an hourly rate because I am very fast and can provide a detailed reading in a few minutes. I am surprised to see such a rude generalization from an Ehow "editor".

on 7/30/2007 I used the services of one of the few legitimate psychics, the late PETER HURKOS. The Dutchman was more
or less bonded through his associattion with the Better
Business Bureau. Something extremely hard to find today.

Contrast this with, for example, the actress Jennifer
Love Hewitt---going to a "party" psychic re: her personal life. She was told to do something OBVIOUS
and it sent her life in a RANDOM direction. Unfortunate-
ly,the rich and famous are special targets for psychic
scams.

What HURKOS did what different. In fact,he even said,
"When you go to a psychic, let THEM tell YOU information!"
