Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
Step1
Think about your dad's style and all the reasons he may wear a tie. Does he wear a tie for business or strictly for social occasions?
Step2
Sneak a peek in his closet or chat with your mom. Get an idea of what color suits he wears and the colors and prints of ties he already owns.
Step3
Consider stripes and small prints for the more conservative dresser, and novelty prints of a favorite hobby or musical group for the more laidback dad. For the fashion-forward father, pair a solid satin-finish tie with a solid dress shirt whose colors are a shade or two apart.
Step4
Head to your local department store or men's specialty store and check out the selection. Look for ties with a smooth silky feel and ones that hang straight when you hold them up from the fold.
Step5
Keep in mind that the ties under glass cases are usually more expensive than the ties displayed on tables.
Step6
Give yourself time to shop, putting off any buying decisions until you're sure you've found the right one.

on 11/22/2005 How about one of the shiny, silky, no-pattern ties that Regis Philbin wears on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" And a plain shirt in the same color? It's the trend of the future, and maybe your dad will wear it when he gets on the show (and mention you).

on 11/22/2005 Keep in mind that many men don't wear ties to work, especially since the workplace is more and more casual. Does your dad need another tie for social functions? Don't fall into the tie trap if he'd prefer something else.
