How to Select a Father's Day Tie for Dad

When you've gotten him all of the tools and sports accessories his garage can hold, remember his closet. Many a dad would love to receive a cool tie on Father's Day - it's something he can always wear, and if you get it for him, he won't have to shop for himself.

1. Think about your dad's style and all the reasons he may wear a tie. Does he wear a tie for business or strictly for social occasions?

2. Sneak a peek in his closet or chat with your mom. Get an idea of what color suits he wears and the colors and prints of ties he already owns.

3. Consider stripes and small prints for the more conservative dresser, and novelty prints of a favorite hobby or musical group for the more laidback dad. For the fashion-forward father, pair a solid satin-finish tie with a solid dress shirt whose colors are a shade or two apart.

4. Head to your local department store or men's specialty store and check out the selection. Look for ties with a smooth silky feel and ones that hang straight when you hold them up from the fold.

5. Keep in mind that the ties under glass cases are usually more expensive than the ties displayed on tables.

6. Give yourself time to shop, putting off any buying decisions until you're sure you've found the right one.

Tips & Warnings

• Think about making a tie part of a gift package. A golf club print tie, for example, would work well with a pack of golf balls, some golf tees and a gift certificate to his favorite green.
• Ask for a gift receipt. In the event that the tie you select is not what your dad had in mind, he can make an easy exchange.
