The common cold is caused by one of more than 200 viruses. Symptoms can include a fever, watery eyes, a runny nose, a sore throat and a cough. Enhancing your body's immune system will help you avoid catching a cold.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Antibacterial Soaps
  • Echinacea
  • Travel-size Soap And Wipes
  • Vitamin C
  • Exercise Equipments
Step1
Wash your hands often. Cold viruses can be transmitted by handshakes and by touching contaminated objects such as doorknobs.
Step2
Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth.
Step3
Avoid people who are coughing and/or sneezing.
Step4
Get plenty of rest to help strengthen your immune system.
Step5
Maintain a healthy diet and get an adequate amount of exercise.
Step6
Drink plenty of fluids.
Step7
Consider taking one 500mg tablet of vitamin C twice a day. Some scientists believe this can help boost your immune system, although there is no hard data to support this.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some studies have shown that the herbal supplement echinacea may be effective at fighting cold symptoms when taken during the first few days of illness'but not prior to exposure. However, there is no scientific data that supports the effectiveness of echinacea.
  • You may be more susceptible to colds when you are under stress, during your menstrual period, or as you get older these are times when your immune system is weakened.

on 6/22/2008 The custom of shaking hands in church during "the peace" is a very unsanitary one. I wish that churches would put an end to this practice. I do all that I can but not much changes. Shaking hands at the door also just spreads germs around big time.

on 6/15/2008 I was just asking my doctor, how long is normal to go without catching a single cold or flu, my entire family gets sick each year with something. They even had the bad things Viral Menengitis and the Norwalk virus a few years ago and yet I have never been sick in 13-15 years. Is this normal? What am I doing that they are not doing? Wish I knew so I could pass on the info to them I am tired of caring for sick family, since I am usually the only one able to once it runs its course.

on 1/24/2008 Just a quick note, antibacterial soap has been proven to be no more effective than regular soap in removing germs on the hands....it is the mechanism of handwashing that is effective. Washing the entire hands, including wrists, under nails, backs or hands and between fingers for a full 15-20 seconds is the key. I just wrote a similar article and am a nurse, so just wanted to make that comment.

on 8/8/2006 Taking a long, hot bath works every time for me. As soon as I feel the least bit sniffly, I climb into a bath, as hot as I can stand, for about 20 minutes. I repeat this 3 times a day. Quite often the cold symptoms disappear.
