Water, weather and the sun can take a toll quickly on wood siding. Here's how to extend your siding's life in the elements.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Protective Wood Stains
  • House Paints
  • Wood Preservatives
  1. Step 1

Protect exposed wood with paint, stains or water-repellent preservatives. Most applications call for two coats.

  2. Step 2

Reapply stains every few years. Watch how water reacts to the wood - when it stops beading up and rolling off, it's time to put on a fresh coat.

  3. Step 3

Repair splits and other damage when you notice them. Mold, mildew and insects will find their way into the wood and wreak havoc.

  4. Step 4

Use rust-resistant screws on warped boards to hold them flat against the house.
