Job hunt for summer cash

Don't just go through the motions when looking for a summer job. With a little time and effort, you can find a job that pays you well that you might even enjoy.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Career Search & Education
  • Career Counseling
  1. Step 1

Keep a résumé on file and update it regularly.

  2. Step 2

Bring the résumé to your school's career counselor and discuss with him or her the type of work you're interested in doing.

  3. Step 3

Consider your priorities. Do you want to be outside coaching a swim team? Do you want to explore the world of Internet start-ups?

  4. Step 4

Research your potential employers, paying attention to exactly what they do. For instance, at a law firm, what kind of law do the attorneys practice? Does the specialty intrigue you?

  5. Step 5

Think from the employer's perspective: How do you, in particular, fit into the company's goals as a business? How can you be of help to this company? Why should it hire anyone for just a summer?

  6. Step 6

Express interest in your employer's work: Artfully stroking egos is an excellent and time-tested way to get people on your side.

  7. Step 7

Meet again with your career counselor - if it's practical - to go over a draft or two or your résumé and get some feedback.

  8. Step 8

Send off your letters and résumés and keep your fingers crossed!

Tips & Warnings
  • Start the process early - at least eight weeks before the end of the spring term. Not only will you get the jump on others, but you'll show your potential employers that you're punctual and efficient.
  • Be creative in what sorts of jobs you consider. Summer is short and can be a great chance to try something new.
  • Don't forget to prepare well for your job interviews (see Related eHows).
