How to Respond to a Stroke

Responding promptly to a stroke can help minimize complications or even save a life. These guidelines follow the recommendations of the American Heart Association.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Call your local emergency service number - 911 or another designated number.

  2. Step 2

    Drive to an emergency room if someone is having a stroke and you can get to a hospital quicker by car.

  3. Step 3

    Have someone drive you to an emergency room if you are having a stroke and can get to a hospital quicker by car, but do not drive yourself.

  4. Step 4

    Administer CPR if necessary while waiting for an ambulance. (See Related eHows.)
