"In the indoor game you can run different lineups, or sets, as they're called, to take advantage of your players' skills," says Rob Heidger, pro beach volleyball player. "The two most common sets are the 6-2 and the 5-1."

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

The 6-2 Set

Step1
"Beginners usually play the 6-2 because it allows you to both serve and hit, which raises your confidence at playing all of the positions," says Heidger.
Step2
Line up three players in the front row and three in the back.
Step3
Space your two setters on opposite rows and diagonally from each other so you always have one setter in the front row.
Step4
Rotate clockwise with each sideout.
Step5
Surprise your opponents by having both setters share duties from rally to rally.

The 5-1 Set

Step1
"Switch to the 5-1 if you are more advanced and have one excellent setter and strong hitters," says Heidger.
Step2
Line up three players in front and three in back, just like the 6-2.
Step3
Have your setter stand near the middle of the court and toward the right in order to favor your right-handed hitters.
Step4
Rotate clockwise at each sideout.
Step5
Shift your setter into position after each serve.
