How to Buy an Outdoor Volleyball Net

"It's always a bummer to go to the beach with friends fired up to play a game and arrive at a court with no net," says Rob Heidger, pro beach volleyball player. "Buy your own, and you'll feel more prepared."

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • $35 to $200

Step1
Decide whether you need just the net (if you play only at a beach where there are permanent poles) or if you need a complete net system.
Step2
Check the text on the box to see that it is regulation size (tournament height).
Step3
Find a lightweight and compact net system that you can carry easily and set up fast and is stable. These three characteristics are tough to find together and could cost a few more bucks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be prepared to spend $35 on the low end and up to $200 for a high-end system.
  • Spalding and Park & Sun Sports are two manufacturers of reputable net systems.
  • Check to see if the area you'll play in has marked court boundaries. If it doesn't, you'll need to pick up a boundary set.

on 9/5/2006 It is very easy to make your own and very cheap. Buy a 1x4 board that is 8 or 10 feet long. I use a 8 foot one. Drill 2 holes in each piece at the top about 3 inches from the top, about 2 inches separate the holes. Use 2 eyebolts that are 1.5 inches long. Put the eyebolts in with an eye on each side. Buy a net with a rope top (getting a rope top net makes it easier to tighten). Get a couple of C clamps that are either unscrewed or click in. Use them to click the net to the eyebolt.

For the guide lines, buy a round ring and 4 pieces of rope that are 15 feet long (from a hardware store), tie one end of 15 foot to the ring. Send the other end through the eyebolt, take that end and loop it twice through the ring. Make two of those guide lines for each side and you are done.

Tie a loop on each piece of rope that a large nail or stake goes through. I have two I use at the park and it great. Just as good as the $300 plus you can paint the wood to make it unique even have your name on it!

on 11/22/2005 When deciding between just a net and a net system, ask yourself, will I EVER want to play anywhere but the place that has permanent poles. I bought a net because it was a good deal and thought I could MAKE poles cheaper. Nope
