These guidelines follow the recommendations of Pacific Gas and Electric Company and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Outdoors

  1. Step 1

    Stay away from trees, downed or sagging power lines, and electrical towers or other metal objects.

  2. Step 2

    Get out of the water and to shore or dry land as soon as possible if swimming or on a boat.

  3. Step 3

    Drop all metal clubs if on a golf course.

  4. Step 4

    Seek the nearest house or building. Stay low by sitting or lying down if there is no shelter nearby.

  5. Step 5

    Stay away from flowing streams that rise above your knees.

  6. Step 6

    Don't try to drive over a flooded road.

  7. Step 7

    Abandon your car if it stalls, and move to higher ground.

  8. At Home

  9. Step 1

    Use the telephone only for emergency purposes or to report hazardous conditions.

  10. Step 2

    Appoint an out-of-state family contact to keep track of family members' whereabouts and conditions.

  11. Step 3

    Move your family and your valuables to the higher levels of your home.

  12. Step 4

    Consult your radio or television for emergency information and instructions.

  13. Step 5

    Disconnect all electrical appliances before you leave if you must abandon your home.
