How to Paint Bricks
Painting brick can refresh older masonry surfaces or completely change the look of brick so that it complements other design elements of your home. Applying a coat of paint to brick, doesn't take long and can dramatically change its appearance. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Bleach
- Paint
- Primer
- Wire Brush
- Putty Knife
- Caulking Gun
- Acrylic or silicon caulk
- Paint brush, sponge or sprayer

Clean the brick surface with a wire brush to remove dust, dirt and any old paint.

Scrape out any cracks in the brick thoroughly using a wire brush or putty knife and seal them with silicon or acrylic caulk.

Wash any mildew from the bricks using a 3 to 1 water and bleach mixture.

Prime the brick surface with an exterior latex primer designed for use on masonry and let it dry completely.

Paint the brick surface using a brush, sponge or sprayer with an exterior latex paint designed for use on masonry and let it dry completely.

Apply additional coats of paint as needed allowing each coat to dry completely between applications.

Tips & Warnings
Use a pressure washer to clean masonry surfaces before applying paint, but don't spray grout or masonry joints directly.
Wear eye protection and gloves when cleaning brick surfaces with bleach.
