How to Make Exercise a Habit

"There are so many fads that come and go," says Joanie Greggains, TV and KGO Radio fitness expert and author of "Fit Happens." "The lasting way to make exercise a habit is to choose a sport or activity that you like and that fits your lifestyle. If you're having fun you'll keep at it."

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately challenging

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Pick an exercise you enjoy so that you look forward to it every day, rather than dreading it.
Step2
Give yourself a reward for completing your exercise. It could be time off, a TV show, a favorite food or a weekly shopping spree.
Step3
Sign a contract with yourself that commits you to the exercise.
Step4
Center your workouts around an event, such as training for the Bay to Breakers in San Francisco.
Step5
Exercise with a partner. It could be a friend, or it could be your dog who deserves a good run.
Step6
Be creative and mix up your sports to avoid boredom.
Step7
Listen to music if you're exercising indoors.

Tips & Warnings

  • "I once had a lady call into my radio program who started running because her veterinarian said her dog needed to lose weight. That was enough to get her out of the house and exercising," Greggains says.
  • You don't have to be "working out" to burn calories. Walk to work, bike to lunch, park in the back of the parking lot, and always take the stairs.

on 11/22/2005 You're not going to have the body of Cindy Crawford in two weeks. It takes time, so don't give up if you don't look like a supermodel after only a couple months.

on 11/22/2005 My number one rule is this: If I can find an excuse--just ONE excuse--not to exercise, then there is no excuse. If there is an excuse lurking around, I push myself up off of the couch and I workout for 1/2 hour (lifting weights, aerobics, dancing, biking, hiking, whatever). I make sure I stretch, warm up, sweat for 30 minutes, and cool down. Before I know it...it's over and done and I usually have a lot of fun working out because I'm proud of what I'm beginning to see in the mirror that I keep in my home gym. I bought myself an MP3 player and I keep it loaded with up-tempo music that I love listening to. When I'm done exercising, the guilt-free conscience is more than enough reward that I need. One excuse is all it takes. One excuse is why I need to workout.

on 11/27/2006 its really easy to make exercising fun...first of all you can move your weights and mats infront of the tv and work out while watching tv. or instead of sitting down why not run in place or stretch. and last but not least you can exercise in the car by tightening your muscles.

on 7/3/2006 You can exercise and still have fun. You can go swimming at a public pool or find a sport, like basketball, to play.
