Step 1
Use a size H crochet hook - or whatever size hook you have handy.

Use any scrap yarn you have on hand, such as a cotton sport-weight yarn or heavy 4-ply yarn.

Chain (ch) 10; turn and join with a slip stitch in second ch from hook.

Row 1: Single crochet (sc) in each ch stitch until the end; ch 1 and turn.

Row 2: Sc in back loop (lp) of each sc until the end; ch 1 and turn.

Step 6
Row 3: Sc in front lp of each sc until end; ch 1 and turn.

Step 7
Row 4-6: repeat rows 2 and 3 and tie off.

Step 8
Cut about 20 pieces of yarn about 2 inches long for the fringe.

Step 9
Tie two pieces of fringe into each sc. Be sure to tie the fringe securely so it won't come untied.

on 11/22/2005 Crochet an extra-tough dog chew if you have two dogs or puppies who like to compete for control of it. Use two strands together of worsted weight, and an H hook or close to that size. Make a rectangle that's at least 6" long and wide enough for two sets of teeth.
This is helpful in keeping dogs from biting each other or fighting too wildly -- they love to play tug-of-war.
Amazingly, this toy stays in one piece for a long time, too!
