Instructions

    • 1

Make homemade applesauce. Peel and core apples, then simmer them with a bit of water, covered, until tender. Purée in the blender.

    • 2

Scoop the flesh out of a pumpkin that has been halved and roasted. Mash well with a fork. Cooking pumpkins such as Sugar Pies work best.

    • 3

Mash parsnips just as you would potatoes. Peel and cut them into chunks, then steam and purée.

    • 4

Bake, steam or poach pears. Baby may even be able to eat an extra-ripe pear that is simply peeled and mashed.

    • 5

Serve babies cooked, puréed figs. These can be seedy, so wait until your baby is 9 to 10 months old.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use organic produce whenever you can. Babies are growing and developing, and pesticides could be especially harmful to them.

  • You can make baby food with a food processor, a blender, a hand blender (also called an immersion blender) or a grinder designed specifically for baby food.

  • Many soft fruits and vegetables can simply be mashed with a fork.

  • If purées are very thick, thin them with breast milk, formula or cooking liquid.

  • Make extra baby food and freeze it in ice cube trays.

  • Keep a record of when you introduce new foods to your baby. That way, if your baby has an adverse reaction, it will be easier to identify possible causes.

  • It isn't necessary to purée and strain all baby foods. It's okay if they're a little lumpy, but be sure the lumps are not hard or big enough to be choking hazards.
