Some gays and lesbians spend hours in chat rooms, while others don't find the quickly scrolling text conversations very interesting. Here's how to find some chat rooms to try out.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet Access
  1. Step 1

Decide why you want to visit a chat room, and choose ones geared to your needs. You may want some conversation, to make friends or to find a long-term relationship.

  2. Step 2

Try out several different chat rooms run by different organizations to find ones that share your values.

  3. Step 3

Consider subscribing to America Online if you're serious about meeting people. It has a lot of built-in features that make communicating with others easy.

  4. Step 4

Get some of America Online's interactive features without subscribing by downloading AOL Instant Messenger from aim.com. Then go back to the site and follow the chat links.

  5. Step 5

Check out the chat rooms on Gay.com.

  6. Step 6

Take a look at the chat rooms available on PlanetOut.com. Click on the People tab.

  7. Step 7

Ask people in the chat rooms, once you're there, to suggest more obscure chat rooms that are tailored to your specific reasons for wanting to chat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid giving out personal information to anyone until you're sure it's safe. Some con artists can be very convincing.

on 3/12/2009 Where does a more conservative gay male go to for friendly chat? How about a place for meeting guys for friends and maybe more? I'm not interested in the "sex as friends" garbageI found on gay.com and the old Yahoo chats. I know AOHell has the same guys as gay.com does. Basically put, I am homosexual, but not gay... due to the values. I assume to stay out of the gay community and its sex and superficial values. I tend to be way deeper than that.I want to find peeps like me, good natured people, not out for a 10 minute relationship... then get dumped. I want to find real people who value other good people for friendship, fellowship, maybe even relating. But where to look is impossible. So, where does one go to find these people? Gay and gay friendly churches didn't work either. That really shocked me to see it didn't.

on 6/23/2007 The best gay chat rooms I've found are at http://hottestmales.com

Totally free.... and ad-free too...

And they claim it always will be.

They are so much better than gay.com...

on 7/6/2006 IRC means Internet relay chat, and it's very popular. There are large networks like dal.net, undernet, ircnet and efnet where you can use a command like - /list gay, and you get a list of the current gay channels with their actual topic. To connect to IRC, you need an IRC client line.

The browser Opera has a build-in IRC client, the messenger Trillian offers the same. IRC is free. If you aren't happy with large channels, like gay on dal.net, try a smaller one.
