Ground covers can add a carpet of flowers and foliage to a sunny garden. Choose colorful blooming plants such as Scotch heather, and ground cover for foliage such as evergreen juniper or sumac, which has bright fall color.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Choose plants well-suited to sun - especially hot afternoon sun - such as stonecrop or ice plant.
Step2
Look at your garden at different times of the day to determine how much sun it gets. Note that "full sun" means at least 6 hours of sun a day, which is what a plant such as lamb's ears needs.
Step3
Decide how many plants you'll need to get by using rocks to represent the plants. Place them at intervals according to how wide the plants grow, then count up the rocks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose a ground cover appropriate for your USDA plant hardiness zone (see Related Sites).
