So you can't make it to the Department of Motor Vehicles? Does the thought of waiting in those lines drive you crazy? Maybe you just don't want to write a check. Relax - you may be able to renew your license plates online.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Check the date on your renewal form - strict penalties apply if you are late.

  2. Step 2

    Make sure you have the necessary funds available on your credit or debit card.

  3. Step 3

    Determine that you have not moved since receiving your renewal notice.

  4. Step 4

    Make sure your renewal notice has an RIN Number.

  5. Step 5

    Ensure that your smog certification is filed with the DMV (if needed). If it is not and one is required, you will not be able to renew online.

  6. Step 6

    File your insurance with the DMV if required.

  7. Step 7

    Locate your state DMV Web site. Type in "Department of Motor Vehicles" and the name of your city or town at a search engine like Google or Yahoo.

  8. Step 8

    Complete the online information and submit it. Make sure that the site offers secure data transfer.

Tips & Warnings
  • This procedure is also known as renewing your vehicle registration, and can apply to boats and motorcycles as well as cars.
  • Not all states allow you to renew your registration online.
