Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small saucepans
  • Distilled water
  • Microwaves or double-boiler
  • Heavy-duty plastic bags
  • Small knife
  1. Step 1

Select asparagus that is firm, has tight heads, and does not have a strong odor.

  2. Step 2

Wash all spears in cool water, making sure to clean any residual soil off of the tips.

  3. Step 3

Cut about an inch off the bottom of each spear. Leave spears whole, or cut into pieces.

  4. Step 4

Using a steamer basket above boiling water, or a saucepan containing about 1/2 cup boiling water, add asparagus and cover pan. Cook until all pieces are tender, about 6 to 10 minutes.

  5. Step 5

    Serve.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also cook asparagus in the microwave. Place about one pound of asparagus in a microwave-safe dish with 1/4 cup water. Cover and cook on high for 5-7 minutes.
  • Store uncooked asparagus in the refrigerator wrapped in a moist paper towel inside a plastic bag.
  • Depending on how "woody" the stalks are, you may have to trim off more than an inch.

on 8/8/2006 Bend each stem and let it break naturally. The tender parts and tough parts will separate themselves. Save the tough parts for stock.
