How to Make a Prize Iceberg

This activity keeps kids busy and cool - conditions that are hard to come by in the summer.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Picnic Tables
  • Prizes
  • Food Coloring
  • Butter Knives
  • Long Wooden Spoons
  • Plastic Containers
  • Plastic Spoons
  • Serving Spoons
  1. Step 1

    Fill a large container with water.

  2. Step 2

    Cover it and place in the freezer.

  3. Step 3

    Check it every couple of hours.

  4. Step 4

    Add an assortment of plastic or other waterproof prizes and toys when the water becomes slushy.

  5. Step 5

    Mix the items into the slush so they are distributed evenly.

  6. Step 6

    Wait for the water to freeze completely.

  7. Step 7

    Take the container outside and dump the iceberg onto a table.

  8. Step 8

    Give children plastic or metal spoons and dull knives.

  9. Step 9

    Let them chip away at the ice to get to the prizes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure you do not give the children any sharp knives or other implements that they could injure themselves with.
  • Placing the iceberg in the sun will make it melt faster and make it easier to get to the prizes.
  • Try adding food coloring to make the iceberg more colorful.
