How to Coach a Youth Soccer Game

The result of a game will be very important to your young players, but it should not be as important to you, the adult coach. When dealing with youngsters, always be aware of the spirit of the game much more than the result.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Arrive early and be prepared. You should be at your destination 45 minutes before kickoff, to make sure that everything is ready.

  2. Step 2

Have your players arrive 30 minutes before the game to warm up.

  3. Step 3

Coordinate with your team manager. Give that person responsibility for game equipment such as flags and goal nets.

  4. Step 4

Set an example with your behavior. If you are polite to the referee, your players will learn to do the same.

  5. Step 5

Determine, before the game, your policy for substituting players. You will need a plan that facilitates the flow of stronger and weaker players and provides equal playing time, if that is a league rule.

  6. Step 6

Try to substitute players after they have done something well rather than poorly.

  7. Step 7

Give players time to settle down at halftime (e.g. get a drink). Don't try to tell them too much, too soon. Keep it short, simple and directive.

  8. Step 8

Keep your team's behavior consistent whether you win or lose the game. Make sure everyone shakes hands with the opposition and thanks the officials, a ritual that should take place after every game.

  9. Step 9

Discuss the game briefly after it is over. Be positive about the team's performance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try not to make an enemy of the opposition. "I tell my players, don't worry about them, but make sure to thank them at the end of the game for giving us the opportunity to play against someone," says Clark.
  • Take stock of your team at midseason. This will help you judge what you're doing right as a coach and what you might need to work on.
  • Soccer is a physically demanding activity that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek the proper equipment and training before undertaking this activity.
