Though the Department of Energy created the Model Energy Code for contractors and architects, it's a savvy way for do-it-yourselfers to identify the best heating and cooling improvements for their homes. The standard covers doors and windows, insulation, heating and cooling units, and water heaters.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit the Department of Energy's Web site for specific information tailored to your Zip code. (See energy.gov.)

  2. Step 2

Recognize that homes in warm climates need insulation just as much as homes in cold regions. The difference is in the installation.

  3. Step 3

Know what type of heating and cooling you use (natural gas, electric, etc.). These are used in figuring the needed R-values for your home.

  4. Step 4

Notice that the column on the left of the MEC lists the areas where insulation is used. The middle column tells you what the best R-value is for that area, and the right column tells you the installation method required.
