Study your market, and be prepared to write for a specific genre.

Become familiar with the publishers in your genre and subgenre.

Join a romance writers' club and attend writers' conferences. Make sure to schmooze with agents at these conferences.

on 4/23/2007 I would also like to suggest getting some software that will help you keep focus and structure your novel. There are quite a few out there, but I particularly like NewNovelist (www.newnovelist.com). This helps me keep my structure while giving me the creative freedom I need.
