How to Format a Floppy Disk

Although disks you buy generally come preformatted nowadays, here's how to format a disk if you ever get a message that it's unreadable. Remember, formatting a disk erases all the information on it.

Things You'll Need:

  • Floppy Disk Drive
  • Floppy Disks
  • Floppy disks
  1. Step 1

    Insert a floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.

  2. Step 2

    Double-click the My Computer icon.

  3. Step 3

    Right-click the icon for the floppy disk drive, usually labeled 3 1/2 Floppy (A:).

  4. Step 4

    Choose Format from the menu that appears.

  5. Step 5

    Click Start.

Tips & Warnings
  • You'll lose all the data on that disk, so don't forget to back up anything you want to keep.
