How to Fill Selections With Patterns In Illustrator

You can fill selections with patterns in Illustrator to create jazzy images. These instructions apply to Illustrator 8. Procedures for other versions may vary.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Adobe Illustrator
  1. Step 1

    Create an object and select it with the Selection tool.

  2. Step 2

    Display the Swatches palette by choosing Show Swatches from the Window menu.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the swatch that you want to use.

  4. Step 4

    Drag the swatch into the selected object. The object fills with that pattern.

Tips & Warnings
  • To modify an existing pattern, be sure no artwork is selected, then drag the pattern onto the artboard. Edit the pattern, then Alt-drag (Windows) or Option-drag (Mac) the new pattern on top of the old pattern in the Swatches palette.
