You can use a pencil drawing as the basis of your Adobe Illustrator artwork. These instructions apply to Adobe Illustrator 8. Procedures for other versions may vary.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Scan your drawing into the computer, and bring it into Illustrator.
Step2
Activate the Autotrace tool.
Step3
Position the crosshair on the object you want to trace.
Step4
To trace the entire object, click on the object and Illustrator will draw the path.

Tips & Warnings

  • To autotrace part of an object, click the object on the point where you want the path to start and drag it to the place where you want the path to end. Alternatively, you could place your scanned drawing in the file as a template layer and then trace over it manually with the pen or other drawing tool.
