How to Bring Artwork Into Illustrator's Work Area

You can bring artwork created in other programs into Adobe Illustrator's work area. These instructions apply to Adobe Illustrator 8. Procedures for other versions may vary.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Adobe Illustrator
  1. Step 1

    Open a file or create a new one through the File menu.

  2. Step 2

    Select Open or Place using the File menu. A window appears.

  3. Step 3

    Browse your folders until you locate the file you want to use. Select that file.

  4. Step 4

    Click OK. The artwork appears on the artboard.

  5. Step 5

    Move or resize as desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Illustrator can import many file formats, including PhotoShop, Freehand, Coreldraw, EPS, PICT, BMP, GIF, JPEG, TIFF, PDF and PostScript.
  • A file that is placed can be embedded or opened.
  • Embedded files reduce the file size of your drawing. However, if you are taking the file out to a printer, you will need to take the embedded image as well.
